Overview & Description
Our softball program helps athletes with intellectual disabilities develop fundamental skills, improve fitness, and build friendships in a supportive, inclusive environment. Participants learn throwing, catching, batting, and base running with encouragement from teammates and coaches. Teams are created to match athletes’ age, skill, and ability levels.
Volunteer Description
Assistant Coach & Team Volunteers: Volunteers who help to organize practice, assist athletes in acquiring sports skills and support a training site/team to cover the 1:4 ratio. These roles can also include providing general supervision and support to the sport team, as well as more direct, 1:1 support to individual athletes as needed.
Requirements & Responsibilities
- Required to have completed a volunteer application, a background clearance, Protective Behaviors Training, General Orientation Training and Concussion Training.Volunteers in this role must be 16 or 17 years old for one-day competitions and 18 or older for overnight competitions and at training sites.
- Team volunteers may be individuals who are only able to attend a few practices, or who want to better understand Special Olympics before becoming more involved.
- Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week during the sport season (usually 8-12 weeks) plus opportunities to support competitions.
