There are 54 city/county programs associated with Special Olympics Pennsylvania across the state, and all of them need volunteers at various times during the year. Volunteer are needed for state events as well. Below are various volunteer opportunities from which to choose. SPECIAL OLYMPICS PENNSYLVANIA (SOPA) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES!
Organizes practices & selects training sites and times. Sport knowledgeable and Special Olympics knowledgeable. Receives training designed specifically for the sport. Coaches must be 16 to 17 yrs. old for one day events. Coaches must be 18 yrs. or older for overnight events.
Participation is seasonal for each sport. The commitment, depending on the sport, ranges from 8-10 weeks, 2 hours per week plus competition day(s) is minimum, but many programs train more often.

The Local Program Management Team administers Special Olympics in their geographic boundaries. Local Program Management Team's are composed 12 volunteer roles to include: Manager, Assistant Manager, Coordinators for Training, Competition, Public Relations, Outreach, and Fund Raising to name a few.
As a Management Team, you will work year-round with fellow members to develop and execute plans for successful programming. Most programs meet on a monthly basis with activities scheduled throughout the year.
Months of preparation goes into coordinating our Special Olympics Games. Games are held in all seasons both on a local, state or sectional level.
Depending on the size of the Games, GOC preparation may take 3 to 8 months planning. Most GOC’s meet monthly – more frequently as Games near, with activities scheduled throughout the planning time.
Event Volunteer roles are many – from officiating or refereeing games/ competitions to pre-Games set-up or serving as a timer, to name a few.
3 to 8 hour shifts on competition days. Time and shifts are position and volunteer recruitment dependant.

HEALTHY ATHLETES: Class B
Non-invasive screenings designed to offer additional support at no cost to our athletes and their families.
HEALTHY HABITS: Class B
Supplemental stations to Healthy Athletes or conducted in high traffic areas when it is not possible to do Healthy Athletes. Healthy Habits are interactive education stations that help build awareness of how healthy habits affect sport performance and everyday life. Topics include: nutrition, hydration, physical activity, endurance, athletic recovery and internet safety.
PERFORMANCE STATIONS: Class B
Education stations held at the playing field or competition venue, designed to educate athletes and supporters on fitness and competition readiness. Performance stations prepare athletes for their event, as well as offer proper post competition education and support.
3-8 hour shifts during competition or standalone event days.
