Beyond the Game: Kasey Scanton

Beyond the Game: A Special Olympics Pennsylvania Profile Series

Meet Kasey Scanton, an 18-year-old volunteer from Connellsville, PA. During the 2024 Winter Games, Kasey told us he’d already committed to Penn State for the following school year. Before graduating, Kasey wanted to “give back and volunteer.”

“My Spanish teacher asked the class if anyone skied, so I raised my hand. She asked if we had any interest in volunteering, and I said, ‘Sure, I’ll go.’ I thought it’d be really cool.

This is my first time volunteering with Special Olympics Pennsylvania. I love it. My guy [Nathan] was really cool and interesting.

We showed up after breakfast and did a ski check. We skied around, for the most part, and warmed up. We did a couple easy runs, and then we did the event.

When I’m with Nathan, I ask him what he wants to do. He tells me what to do and where we’re going, and then we do it. It’s basically just like skiing with a friend.

I didn’t think he couldn’t ski because everyone competing here is skiing. But I did not think he’d be as good as he is. He’s doing like, boxes and rails and stuff, and it’s really cool. He’s competing with me now. I’ve been skiing since I was 15, so about three years now.” here. It’s just, it’s too much fun and too much positive energy to turn down.”
