WHAT IS VIRTUAL RUNNING/WALKING?
BSR Web Image

Virtual running/walking is a way to participate that can be done at any location, any time, and at any pace at the distance of your choice (5K run or a 2 mile fun walk). You can walk, jog, use the treadmill, run outside, or you can participate in any other fashion. If you’re working from home and stuck inside most of the day, this is a perfect way to break up the day and enjoy some fresh air with your family!

You can do your virtual run/walk at any time from April 18th to May 9th. A Virtual Celebration featuring runners and celebrity guests like Sue Paterno and Hall of Fame Steelers Running Back Franco Harris will take place via a Facebook livestream on Sunday, April 18th at 11 a.m. Likewise, a Virtual Celebration will be held on Monday, May 10th at 7 p.m.

WILL TIMES NEED TO BE SUBMITTED FOR THE RACE/WALK?

It depends on how you choose to register. You don't need to submit a time in order to receive your official event t-shirt and medal; but, if you’d like for us to recognize your 5K run times, you can sign-up a few different ways.  The 2 mile walk, however, will not have a timed option.

  • Virtual 5K Walk/Run (Run the Course) If you plan to run the actual Beaver Stadium Run Course in State College, minus ending inside the Stadium, you can register to have your run timed. You will have from April 18th to May 9th to complete your run. If you would like your time to be recognized, you can submit it to us, but you are not required to do so. You don't need to submit a time in order to receive your official event t-shirt and a medal.
  • Virtual 5K or 2 Mile Walk/Run (Run Anywhere) If you plan to run the distance of the Beaver Stadium Run from anywhere, you can register to have your run timed. You will have from April 18th to May 9th to complete your run. You don't need to submit a time in order to receive your official event t-shirt and medal.

WHAT ARE THE FEES ASSOCIATED WITH THE VIRTUAL RUN/WALK?

  • Virtual Fun/Run & Commemorative Medal: $45 (includes t-shirt & medal shipping costs)

Participants will have the opportunity to opt-out of receiving the event t-shirt and/or medal during the registration process to save Special Olympics PA on the costs associated with shipping, which will be put towards supporting thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities.

HOW DO I FUNDRAISE FOR THE VIRTUAL RUN/WALK?

  • Once registered as a virtual participant, your personal fundraising page will automatically be created. Virtual participants can be team captains, members of teams, participate in fundraising contests and become top fundraisers.
  • “Be the light at the end of the tunnel” for thousands of Special Olympics athletes. Maximize your fundraising impact! Ask your friends and family to sponsor your efforts. Ask them to donate per mile or to donate a flat amount for the total 5K or 2 mile walk.
  • Please also keep in mind that there’s no set amount for sponsorship, so your friends and family can sponsor you at any level that’s feasible for them. You can also choose to pay more than the registration fee as an extra donation.

TIPS & IDEAS FOR YOUR VIRTUAL RUN/WALK

If you haven’t registered for a timed virtual offering, consider using different apps like Google Maps, Map My Run, Nike Running, etc., to determine a 5K or 2 mile route near you! You can share your 5K or 2 mile Fun Walk with your friends, family, etc., through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram by using #VirtualBSR

Can’t run the 5K or walk 2 miles all in one day? No problem! You can break the distance up over multiple days to make it more manageable. All you have to do is register!
