National Recognition Program Honors Two PA High Schools
This prestigious recognition by our international headquarters is given only to a select number of schools which demonstrate a commitment to meaningful inclusion and quality Unified Champion Schools’ (UCS) programming.
Just over 125 high schools throughout the country are being honored in 2019, and only two are from Pennsylvania: Fox Chapel Area High School (Pittsburgh, PA) and Haverford High School (Havertown, PA). Both schools are the first in their county to receive this award and join the distinguished ranks of our five previous UCS National Banner recipients in the state. Special Olympics Pennsylvania is proud of their distinguished accomplishment!
A Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School demonstrates a commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 standards of excellence. These standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community. Both Fox Chapel and Haverford have an enriching and nurturing climate which exudes a sense of collaboration, engagement, and respect for all members of the student body and staff.
As part of the process for being selected, both high schools will host a schoolwide assembly sometime in the fall. In addition to unveiling the Unified Champion Schools national banner in their gymnasium, the event will celebrate and showcase how inclusion, acceptance, and respect are integral to your students and staff.
We congratulate and thank our 2019 National Banner Unified Champion Schools for being leaders in the Inclusion Revolution.
