Frequently Asked Questions – December 2017
Q – Can we (a SOPA local program) sign up for Amazon Smile program?
A – The State Office reached out to Special Olympics, Inc. to get an answer to this question, which has arisen several times here locally. In short, many state and local are signed up for Amazon Smile across the country. But, we (SOI) do not know of any that are generating any significant revenue, even at the National Level. If you’d like to sign up, the state office will not stand in your way. However, given your time is valuable, we do not encourage/recommend this, as generally charity shopping programs simply don’t generate much revenue. The time you spend getting registered and set up may not be worth the small amount of funds that will come back your way. Any questions please call Eric Cushing at 610-630-9450, ext. 229.
Q – Management Team: Who votes?
A – The members of the Program Management Team (PMT) bring their unique skills and experiences that creates an effective decision making process. Therefore, all positions on the management team participate in the management of the program and in that capacity vote on issues brought before the management team.
Q – When to vote?
A – Voting should be done at the regular PMT meeting. Issues or subjects or actions are brought before the team and a discussion should occur to evaluate the issue/subject/action seeking input from the team members. At the conclusion of the discussion the Program Manager should call a vote. All members of the PMT have an equal vote. All financial decisions should be voted on with specifics on the amounts and what the items or services are being purchased. All motions must be documented in the minutes of the meeting.
Q – Coordinators, co-coordinators versus committees?
A – There are 15 positions on the Program Management Team; this includes the program manager, assistant manager and treasurer which are position held by one individual. Other positions such as and not limited to Competition Coordinator, Training Coordinator and Database Coordinator depending on the size of the program and the workload may have multiple individuals fill these positions. The program manager and the PMT are free to manage these decisions. A committee under the coordinator position is a very useful option in particular for Fundraising as long as the coordinator is the chairperson of the committee.
It is important that PMT positions held by Volunteers is reflected on their Vsys profile. The profile information is used to communicate with the respective coordinators from SOPA.
Q – Can Athlete Representatives pursue other positions on the Local Program Management Team?
A – Athlete Representatives who have successfully served for a calendar year have the ability to shadow a Local Program Management Team member in a position they’re eventually interested in assuming. Athlete Representatives who have successfully shadowed a Local Program Management Team member for a calendar year are able to pursue that position with approval from the manager. Contact Athlete Leadership Coordinator and / or your Local Program manager for more information.
