2022 Leadership Conference and Athlete Leadership Graduation Update

We have made the decision to not host the 2022 Leadership Conference. Special Olympics PA is discussing the future purpose of this event. We imagine this to be a collaborative process involving many of you!

This year instead, we will host our quarterly Board of Directors meeting, an Athlete Congress as well as an Athlete Leadership University Graduation in-person at the Penn Stater in State College. Athlete Congress will tentatively start at 4PM on Friday, August 26th and end at 11 AM on Sunday, August 28th. Athlete Leadership University Graduation will tentatively start at 4PM on Saturday, August 27th and end at 9 PM that same night.

More about Athlete Congress: Each Program may send one Athlete Representative and Mentor to Athlete Congress (with the exception of those currently serving on the Regional Input Council).

  • Local programs with multiple Athlete Representatives must decide internally who they wish to send. Examples of selection of Athlete Representatives may include, but are not limited to:
    • Alternating from one Athlete Congress to the next.
    • Giving current Athlete Leadership Team Chair priority.
    • Allowing Athlete Leadership Team/Management Team to vote.
  • Starting in 2022, to allow for more geographic participation, Program without any trained and active Athlete Representatives may do one of the following as long as athlete agrees to get trained as an Athlete Representative in 2023:
    • Select an athlete with no prior Athlete Leadership experience that is able to share ideas, questions and concerns with little/no support from others.
    • Select a current Athlete Leader (Global Messenger/Health and Fitness Coordinator) that has already completed their other roles’ required practicum(s).

  • The Class of 2020, 2021 and 2022 will be honored.
  • To be eligible all Athlete Leaders must submit their required practicums by Monday, August 1st.

Athlete Leadership University Graduation registration (if not attending Athlete Congress) is forthcoming and will be sent out via email to Program Managers/Team Leads!
