Logo2018 Special Olympics USA Games - July 1 - 6 in Seattle

The 2018 Special Olympics USA Games will be held in Seattle, Washington July 1-6, 2018. Nearly 3,500 athletes will compete in an array of Olympic-type team and individual sports, with the support of 1,000 coaches, and tens of thousands (if not more!) volunteers and spectators. The Games will celebrate the Special Olympics movement, promote the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sport and showcase athletes from throughout the U.S. and the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. 2018 USA Games Allocations:

Slots will be awarded based on interest and place of finish during qualifying events. All those expressing interest, meeting all athlete requirements/expectations and receiving approval of their local program will be eligible for selection. All gold medalists or highest placing finishers will be placed in a random draw for selection during closing ceremonies at Summer Games and Fall Festival in 2017.

2018 USA Games Levels

Sport Specific Selection Criteria

Athlete Requirements:

Athlete requirements/expectations include, but are not limited to:

  • All athletes and unified partners must be at least 14 years old
  • Athletes selected must attend all training sessions/camps determined by the state program
  • All athletes must have a local coach identified to work in coordination with the Team PA coach.
  • Must be able to obtain an Athlete medical, the new SOI medical will need to be completed.
  • Athletes must be able to handle independently and/or under Team Pennsylvania supervision an 18-20 hour travel day (primarily air travel).
  • Athletes must be able to be assigned to a Team Pennsylvania coach for the duration of their travel to/from the Games, during the Games, including in the housing site and competition venues and during the Delegation training camp prior to the Games.
  • Athletes must be able to be away from their families and jobs for approximately a 10 day period to attend the Games (exact travel dates will be available at a later date).
  • Athletes must be able to independently manage the activities and skills of daily living, such as toileting, showering, personal hygiene, etc.
  • Athletes must be able to take care of themselves during the course of the USA Games with minimal contact from family members.

  • June 2017: Summer Games, Qualifier – Winners will be randomly selected and announced
  • August 2017: Summer Sport Athlete Applications Due
  • Nov 2017: Fall Fest, Qualifier - Winners will be randomly selected and announced
  • December 2017: Fall Sport Athlete Application Due
  • March 2018: Team PA Training Camp
  • June 2018: Mini-Training Camp and send-off at Summer Games
    • Coaches and athletes will train together throughout the weekend
    • Families will be invited
    • Send-off celebration for athletes/families, recognition during OC
  • July 2018: USA Games
