Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) was recently presented with a check for the second consecutive year as the beneficiary of the Chevron/Pro Football Alumni Charity Golf Invitational, an event held on July 17, 2017 at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley, PA. This year’s event raised $110,000, and nearly $175,000 has been raised over the past two years combined. Funds raised will have a huge impact on the lives of athletes in Western Pennsylvania and across the Commonwealth; and, it will be used for their participation in numerous competitions and programs like Healthy Athletes and Athlete Leadership.

The Invitational, or celebrity scramble golf tournament, teamed every participating group up with a retired pro football alumni player or coach. Some of the celebrity players included Steelers John Banaszak, Rocky Bleier, Mike Wagner, Robin Cole, Louis Lipps, Greg Lloyd and Hall of Famers Mel Blount, Kellen Winslow, Randall McDaniel, Lem Barney, Mike Haynes and Bobby Bell. The former players also included those who are now well-known professional football television broadcasters such as former Steeler Merrill Hoge and former Pitt All-American/Washington Redskin star Mark May.
